Garbage Boy Finds New Life

Supot’s life has radically changed since arriving at Baan Songsawang, a children’s home supported by Operation Blessing (OB). On the 25th May 2007, OB began providing monthly support of 28,450Baht (about $900USD) to purchase food for the 25 children at the Home. Most of these children have lost at least one parent and have come from tragic backgrounds.

Before Supot was one year old, his father passed away with lung cancer. His step-father was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. His mother’s third husband didn’t want Supot around and left him to the care of his elderly grandmother who was very poor and unable to look after him.

Supot spent much of his time rummaging through garbage along the roads to try to find plastic bags and bottles to sell to buy some food. He made less than 50cents a week. During the farming season, he would often skip school to spray pesticides for farmers. The pesticides got into cuts and wounds on his legs and became infected. Sometimes he had to use the money he made to buy medicine for his wounds.

When Supot’s mother wrote to Baan Songsawang for help, the staff went to meet Supot. They spent a whole day trying to find him because he was out picking through garbage. When they found Supot, he was pale, malnourished, and had infected wounds and cuts all over his arms and legs.

Thirteen year old Supot has been living at Baan Songsawang since 20th May 2007. In less than one year, this young teenager from the Hmong hilltribe, has transformed into a happy content boy, who takes great delight in catching catfish in his spare time.

Supot now attends school regularly. He no longer has to skip classes to work with pesticides or pick through garbage to raise money for food. Supot now has all the food he needs. He is healthy and strong, and his infections have all healed. At Baan Songsawang he has house parents and many friends who love and nurture him, providing for all his needs.

Supot is growing into a fine young leader. He is the head of one of the four work groups at the Home. Supot was also chosen by the children at Baan Songsawang to be their assistant leader, a role that comes with many extra responsibilities. Supot’s dream is to one day become a policeman. Now with the help from Baan Songsawang and Operation Blessing, Supot has a much better chance to see this dream one day become a reality.
